A māori legend about a beautiful magic woman who comes from the sea. At night she weaves all these beautiful, useful items that the people of the village have never seen, out of the harakeke (flax) leaves. The wāhine (women) of the village want to learn as well but first they must find a way to make the magic woman weave during the day so they can see how she does it.
This story is a great introduction into weaving before you give it ago yourself. It talks about cutting the harakeke so that the leaves will continue to grow and all the different things you can make out of the leaves. It also includes some basic māori words so children become more familiar with them.
